Throwback Thursday Feb-23-2017

As I was scrolling through the Manchester Historic Association’s archive, one picture caught my eye.
The picture?

A giant, blue pig.

Said pig.

Said pig.

Pretty eye-catching, right?

So with a little investigating, I found out some pretty interesting information about this structure. According to a tiny news blurb in The Southeast Missourians November 20, 1972 issue (even Missouri thought this was cool!), the pig was “28 feet in height and 100 feet in circumference. It [was] painted bright blue with pink flowers on the sides, and…built around a trailer.” As I continued to read on I learned “the piggy is a temporary facility of a local bank while they are remodeling. It has four bank teller stations inside, and two drive up stations outside.” With a few more clicks, I found out the bank was a branch of the now-closed Manchester Bank. According to the Manchester Historic Association, it was built around Labor Day in 1972.

How’s that for an actual ¬†piggy bank!?

While scrolling through Facebook this week I stumbled upon this post by Mint Bistro:

Mint Bistro Post.png

Now I don’t know about you, but to me the thought of sipping on a fresh mint Mojito is quintessential Summer. Bright, citrusy, ¬†and most importantly, COLD!

Of course, the perfect summer drink differs from person to person. Some people prefer an ice cold brew. Others might like a frozen margarita. Luckily, there’s no shortage of options for icy drinks in downtown! So the next time you’re craving a brisk drink, be sure to stop by Elm Street!

What’s your favorite summer drink?

Happy Friday, Manchester!

Although it may not be widely celebrated, today just happens to be National Gummi Worm Day! Of course, we in the office never need an excuse to eat more candy. Here’s a little bit of history about how National Gummi Worm Day came to be from Daysoftheyear.com:

History of Gummi Worm Day
Before we can talk about Gummi Worms, we have to talk about Gummi Bears. Gummi Bears were the original Gummi candy created by the Haribo company in 1920. These delicious ursine candies came in a broad variety of fruit flavors and were intended for both adults and children to enjoy. The secret to these little candies gumminess is from a careful mixture of special ingredients, the most important being the gelatin that helps to give the candy its form, and the sugar and citric acid that gives it its flavor.
From these initial gummi candies, many other types and shapes came into existence, but none of them could take the crown from the popular gummi bear. It wasn’t until Trolli created the gummi worm that this changed. Gummi worms were fun to eat, they could easily be used to create creative desserts, and were even more fun (in our opinion) to eat than gummi bears!
Gummi Worm Day was organized to celebrate the fellow confectionary monarch to the gummi bear, and the amazing Trolli company that brought it into existence. Gummi worms comes in even more flavors and varieties than the original gummi bear, including all the basic flavors, sweet and sour flavors, and our personal favorite, the sour gummi worm.”

Since I’m sure you now have a hankering for something sweet, you can get your gummi worm fix right here in downtown at Granite State Candy Shoppe!

What’s your favorite flavor Gummi Worm?

Yesterday was the first market day for The Manchester Community Market! Now, every Thursday from 3p-6:30p, you can stop in to Victory Park and pick up all kinds of fresh produce. After looking around at all the amazing vendors, and watching people stroll through the grass and trees while shopping, I think this market is going to become a downtown destination for the summer! Not only will there be fruits, veggies, and sweets like years past, The Manchester Community Market also offers fresh dairy products, artisan chocolates, all natural and organic skincare, plus so much more. To see a full list of all the vendors involved, click here.

I can’t wait to break out my market bags, and shop for fresh and local goods all summer long!
