2002 marked the first ever Business Adopt-A-Block! Adopt-A-Block is Intown’s Annual Downtown cleanup day where local businesses form teams to cleanup areas throughout Downtown. In 2002 there were about 100 volunteers and in 2016 we had almost 200! This event remains a Downtown favorite! See pictures from this year’s Adopt-A-Block here!
By 2002, Intown Manchester’s ‘Dressing Up Downtown’ initiative was in full swing. Among the purchases of the year were black, cast iron trash cans throughout Hanover Street, Arms Park, Stanton Plaza among other locations. Additionally, with the help of Mayor Baines, City Hall plaza was outfitted with benches, litter and cigarette containers. We are so happy to continue the Dressing Up Downtown Initiative in 2016 with our everyday beautification efforts, Christmas decorations, and our storefront decorating contests, among many other efforts!
In the March 2002 issue of Intown Manchester News was a great spread (below) that perfectly showed the strides of Downtown by 2002. See below for the images of some amazing restorations on buildings we walk by everyday! It’s amazing how far our Downtown has come!
